ITORO COLUMBA AND THE CALL FOR GRASSROOT LEADERSHIP

Local Government was created by Nigeria Government to take governance closer to the people at the grassroot level. As government that is closer to the people, the impact of local government administration should be felt especially by people who residents in villages and hamlets, but that is not the case. While many local government administrators across the country are involved in buying choice properties in big cities, others are committed to serve the people by championing policies and programs that have direct impact in the lives of those that they lead. One typical example of such local government administrators is the current Transition Committee Chairman of Ikono, Mr. Itoro Columba.

Since his inauguration by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State late last year, Mr. Columba aka #UnwanaAdi (Light has Come) has engaged in real governance programs that has change the psyche of his people. No wonder he is being asked by his people to continue in office to bring the much expected "Light" that Ikono people have been yearning for. Just yesterday, this media guru turned politician invited the Wife of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel to commissioned 215 markets sheds for Ikono women nicknamed FEYReP's Posh Sheds at the popular Obo Urban Market in Ikono Local Government Area built by his administration as the Head of that local government Transition Committee Chairman.

He didn't end there. He also partnered with a Non-governmental Organization, Sunrise Development Initiative (SDI) to trained 355 Ikono youths in about 16 skill acquisition programme, an entrepreneurial and human capacity programme aimed at preparing the youth of the area to be prepared for job opportunities and also create jobs for themselves. He did this even in the face of recession as experienced in the country. Mr. Columba has been able to proved to the naysayers that youth are the driving force to democratic governance. Their ideas and initiative bring about the necessary change that the people are glamouring for. His love for his people and passion for grassroot development is highly commendable.

"It is not that Itoro Columba has so much money, but when someone loves his people, he can do anything possible for the development of his people" - Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel
From the above statement coming from no mean personality but the wife of the governor of Akwa Ibom State, Ikono people should not look elsewhere but to rally round to support for the election of Mr. Itoro Columba as the Executive Chairman of Ikono LGA whenever local government election is conducted. He is academically qualified, intelligently sound and developmentally driven so as to bring light to Ikono people.
