EKET ELDERS PARLEYS WITH INDIGENOUS JOURNALISTS

Some selected elders from Eket local government area of Akwa Ibom State today meet with some indigenous Journalists from Eket to strengthen relationship in projecting the area in good light.
Declaring the meeting open, the political leader of Eket and former Minister of Housing, Chief Nduese Essien advocated for Journalists from Eket axis to abide by the ethics of the profession and project the area in good light, as Eket people have been outstanding in everything that they do. He advised the Journalists to get involved in issue based journalism which will bring investors and development to the area rather than engage in yellow journalism which are not sustainable.

The two term member of the Federal House of Representatives stated that the journalists should from time to time seek opinions of their leaders especially on very sensitive issues before going to the press, so as to give a factual information to the public, as journalists help to influence public opinions. He pledged the elders committed to work with indigenous media practitioners from the area, saying this would promote understanding and help to advance the cause of Eket people.
Chief Nduese Essien
In his contribution, the former Chief Press Secretary to the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Usoro I. Usoro said that Journalists should be patriotic and be factual in their reportage. He also advocated for Eket Journalists to be united and project Eket in good light. He frowned at the falsehood spread on social media practitioners as anti-developmental to the progress of any community and called for people to refrain from such behaviour.

In their different speeches, Prof. Etie Ben Akpan, Barr Akpadiaha Ebitu, Barr. Assamudo, Chief Jack Udota and Pst Ita Udo Umo corroborated the position earlier advanced by Chief Nduese Essien and advised Journalists in the area to always confide with stakeholders on issues of community development and also seek their opinions before publishing it as some of them are averse with facts that can help shape opinions on issues concerning Eket people.

Responding, the Publisher of the Ink Newspaper, Nsibiet John commended Eket elders for the parley and advised that it should be a routine activities as it will help the media to portray the community in good light, as journalists don't create news but only report.

Others who make contribution to the discussion were Assam Abia and Ene John. Mr Assam said that this parley is long overdue but pledged his commitment to work together for the development of Ekid people.
Ene John thanked the elders of Eket for thinking it wise to convened such meeting as it will help the media practitioners in the area to have factual information on very sensitive issues bordering on the collective interest of Eket people and indeed Akwa Ibom State in general. He expressed disappointment on attitude of some elders in Eket especially the politicians who do not pick calls or responded to text messages when their opinions are demanded on very sensitive issues, and called for a change of attitude for the collective interest of Eket people.

Earlier, the SA to the Governor on Media, Essien Ndueso commended the convener of the meeting to chart the way forward for the growth of Eket and urged Journalists from the area to abide by the ethics of the profession and be hardworking, stating that their effort will be rewarded in due season.

The elders in attendance were Chief Nduese Essien, Prof. Etie Ben Akpan, Hon. Ekanem Willie, Rt Hon. (Barr) Jack Udota, Barr Akpadiaha Ebitu, Barr. Udo Joseph Assamudo, Pastor Ita Udo Umo, Pastor Aniedi Usoro, Chief Usoro I Usoro, Emman Sammy while the media include Inspiration Radio, Heritage Radio, The Ink Newspaper, Pioneer, Sensor, NAN, Trail Reporters and other online publishers.
